Most parenting (and classroom management) models focus only on behaviour and depend on an external locus of control They use rewards and/or punishment to (micro) manage and control a child behavior. These programmes may seem to work temporarily but are ineffective in the long term and are often discouraging. They can be summed up as being about teaching children what to think.
Positive Discipline – which is based on Adlerian psychology - is fundamentally different in that it focuses on teaching children how to develop an internal locus of control - doing the right thing when no one is looking - and not being dependant on rewards or punishment to make healthy and positive choices. It’s about teaching children how to think.
